GISBox

MapGIS

GISBox is a one-stop 3D GIS data editing, conversion and publishing platform that supports editing in multiple GIS formats such as OSGB/GEOTIFF/RVT, converting to 3DTiles/Terrain and publishing.

Introduction

MapGIS is a domestic geographic information system (GIS) platform developed by China’s Zondy Cyber Group. The platform was born in the 1980s and has become one of the most widely used GIS software in China. MapGIS provides a variety of product lines such as desktop GIS, server GIS, Web GIS, and cloud GIS, which can realize the collection, management, analysis, visualization and sharing of spatial data.

File Structure

  1. MapGIS unique format
  • WT/WK format
    • WT: A format for storing spatial data, including geometric data such as points, lines, and surfaces.
    • WK: A file that stores attribute data and saves data in a table format.
  • WDF format
    • MapGIS’s raster (image) data format.
    • Used to display satellite images or DEM (digital elevation model) data.
  1. Standard format compatibility

MapGIS supports the following standard GIS file formats:

  • **Shapefile (SHP): **A vector data format developed by ESRI that stores geographic feature data such as surfaces and lines.
  • **GeoTIFF: **A raster image file format that contains spatial reference information.
  • KML/KMZ: An XML format used by Google Earth that stores location information and attribute data.
  • GML (Geography Markup Language): An XML-based spatial data exchange format.
  • GeoJSON: A lightweight geographic data format commonly used in Web applications.

Pros

  1. Advantages of domestic GIS platform: MapGIS is developed by Chinese local enterprises and is highly compatible with domestic geospatial data standards and land planning and land management systems. It is widely used in government agencies and public projects.
  2. High-performance slicing and visualization functions: MapGIS has high-speed large-scale tile slicing and rendering functions, which can efficiently visualize large amounts of geographic data, and is particularly suitable for 3D city modeling and simulation.
  3. Multifunctional spatial analysis tools: Built-in spatial analysis, buffer, overlay analysis, network analysis, DEM analysis and other spatial analysis tools, with powerful functions.
  4. **Web and mobile support: **MapGIS supports Web GIS and mobile GIS, can display and operate maps on browsers and mobile devices, and supports real-time data visualization and sharing.
  5. Cloud support: Integrated with cloud platforms, supports online data management and geographic analysis, and supports multi-person collaborative editing and sharing.

Cons

  1. Limited compatibility with international standard formats: MapGIS is widely used in China, but it is not as standardized as ESRI’s ArcGIS internationally, and its interoperability with overseas GIS platforms is limited.
  2. Complex operation: It is powerful but complex to operate, and not very friendly to beginners. Especially in 3D modeling and custom analysis tools, certain GIS expertise is required.
  3. Performance bottleneck: When processing large-scale data, performance may decline. Especially on the Web side, it is slow to load and render large amounts of data.

Application Scenario

MapGIS is often used for urban infrastructure visualization and land use monitoring, such as land classification, building planning, population distribution analysis, etc. In disaster emergency management, MapGIS is used for evacuation route planning and disaster impact range visualization, and can simulate disasters such as floods, earthquakes and typhoons. In traffic management, MapGIS is used for road network analysis and traffic congestion prediction to achieve path optimization, travel time calculation and public transportation operation management. In the field of environmental monitoring, MapGIS can be used for ecological monitoring such as deforestation, water quality changes, and biodiversity protection. In addition, MapGIS is also widely used in smart city construction, such as smart street lights, public facility planning and urban 3D modeling.
