GISBox is a one-stop 3D GIS data editing, conversion and publishing platform that supports editing in multiple GIS formats such as OSGB/GEOTIFF/RVT, converting to 3DTiles/Terrain and publishing.
Introduction
**DWF (Design Web Format) **is a file format developed by Autodesk for distributing and sharing design drawings and 3D models.
Compared with native CAD formats such as DWG or DXF, DWF is designed for lightweight and secure sharing.
DWF is a read-only format for viewing, annotation and reviewing, and is not used for drawing or editing. Therefore, it is widely used in fields such as architecture, civil engineering, and mechanical design as a means of sharing design information securely and efficiently among relevant personnel.

File Structure
- **Extension: **.dwf or .dwfx (the latter is a new format based on XML)
- **Supported data types: **2D drawings, 3D models, metadata (attribute information)
- Structural characteristics:
- Compressed format (small file size)
- Supports multiple drawings (multiple pages)
- Can contain layers, views, annotations and other information
- .dwfx format is based on the ZIP structure and is written in XML
Pros
- Lightweight: Smaller than DWG files, suitable for transmission over the Internet or by email
- High security: Read-only format to prevent accidental or malicious modification
- Free viewing: Free viewing through tools such as Autodesk’s Design Review or Navisworks Freedom
- Support for multiple drawings: Multiple drawing pages can be packaged into one DWF file
- Preserve metadata: Can view the material, size and other attribute information contained in the model or drawing
Cons
- Unable to edit: only for viewing, not suitable for direct editing in CAD
- Limited compatibility: non-Autodesk software may not fully support the DWF format
- Unable to retain design history: DWF is only an output format and does not record the design process
- File conversion required: need to be exported from native formats such as DWG, Revit to DWF
Application Scenario
DWF is mainly used for the review and approval process of design drawings and models. For example, in the early stages of architectural design, drawings can be presented to clients or reviewed by team members in project review meetings.
Since the format is not editable, it ensures information consistency and allows feedback by adding annotations or marks.
In addition, DWF files can be easily shared via the cloud or internal network, speeding up the transfer of information within and outside the team. It is particularly suitable for industries such as architecture, civil engineering, and manufacturing that often require drawing review.
Example
- dwf file.

- Export to dwf format.

File Opening Mode
- Open the DWF file with Autodesk Design Review for viewing.
